As it's now September I thought I'd throw my hat in the ring so to speak with a sketch started on my walk today. I actually managed over the designated 10,000 steps but needed a cuppa and a sit-down (no gin available I'm afraid). Found some super cheap pens in 'The Works' 0.38mm - three for £1 so thought I'd try them out - not water resistant but I love a bargain. Edited

If not water-resistant or lightfast, just tuck them into your drawing pad and cover them - artists' notebooks and sketchbooks are often full of treasures, usually discovered by future generations: I live in hope that SOME of mine will come as a nice surprise.
I'm a gin-fiend, so felt your pain. Oh, and Gillian - love your Meerkat!

Robert Jones, NAPA on 01/09/2022 19:18:58” Thanks Robert , good point , well made. Probably a false economy. I’ll use them for shopping lists. I once bought some watercolour paper from the same shop; atrocious stuff.

Thanks Robert! Lovely sketch Andrew even if pens aren’t lightfast etc . Think we all buy something’s occasionally thinking they were a bargain to discover they were not what we thought! Look forward to more sketches from you! Poorly dog here hence no sketch today but promise something tomorrow!

While there are conflicting views about eye-strain, i.e. there are those who say you can't hurt your eyes by using them, I remember my first optician, a Dr Hill - a real doctor of medicine, unlike most opticians and optometrists; incidentally, a tiny man, under 5' tall, who rode a very large horse - we make 'em peculiar on the Isle of Wight. Anyway, coming to the point: he found out that I drew and painted, and said he used to work with "pen and ink obsessively: the very thing you shouldn't do": well, the common consensus was that Dr Hill was more than slighty eccentric, but he was a very good eye doctor; his advice, Gillian, was to take frequent rests and don't keep peering at the paper, especially with small and detailed drawings; advice that I've followed, on the whole: when my eyes start to ache, or I see rather more lines on the paper than are actually there, I stop for a bit. Eyes being an artist's principal asset, it's a good idea to take great care with them.

I shouldn’t be looking at a screen now but I can’t sleep. I do think that you can overdo it by peering closely - you don’t realise you are doing it until you’ve overdone it! My eyes used to sting and the whites were pink - a little sign I think🤪😳. I don’t do such small or close work now so it doesn’t tend to happen…unless I read too much…or do this!

Looking good Denise! I just did a pastel pencil sketch of a meerkat
