Back from my travels to Ogmore Vale in Wales.  So many lovely sketch’s and painting while I’ve been away.  Here’s a couple of sketches plein air (my first experience of) Weather was really bad so not many opportunities to sketch outdoors.  Have managed to get a few photo references for future paintings I hope.
The finished ‘misty trees’ is great Paul. Like the tulips Katy the colour is lovely. Lucky you Hilary on your travels! Really nice on site sketches, pity you didn’t get great weather but still nice to find subjects that inspire you! The heat here is thankfully beginning to cool down so hoping to get out a wee bit. No sketching over past couple of days (Other things on my mind) but hope to sit and do something today!
You did well, Hilary, to get some plein air done in this weather. We’re of to the Highlands soon and I expect the same weather but will try. Have ordered a nice watercolours sketch book to encourage me. Lots of wet in wet I expect🌧🤣
Nice flower Katy, and great sketches Hilary. Pleased it cooling down at last  for you Gillian, I would imagine you have plenty to think about with you move back soon. As you have probably gathered I have a real love of woodland and tree, my sketch is pencil with watercolour. The pencil work was done last week when we had a picnic with the granddaughters in the woodland, watercolour added today. It’s a study of old beech pollards on a wood bank.  Trees were pollarded to gain the wood and so that deer and cattle could not eat the regrowth. I may do a watercolour at some stage or use the trees in another setting.

I like your tree scenes Dixie, and the views in Wales Hilary, especially the chapel which would make a good painting. I haven’t done much this last week but here’s a little pen sketch of what’s Ben keeping me busy today. Pen with a dash of watercolour and cold tea, because I was too lazy to get water for such a small thing!
I’m always intrigued by the inspiration for sketches on PoL. Very nice sketches Hilary, hope you enjoyed the break. Dixie, great sketch and explanation of pollarding. Not always a nice way to spend a summer’s day, Tessa, but without a laundry fairy someone has to do it. It’s great that you also used it to give us another colourful sketch. Unfortunately I didn’t leave myself time to sketch the last few days, but managed to pick up a brush or two and did a small painting instead (in the gallery). Roll on September sketches.

Gosh the last day of August already!  Right in that case I MUST do something today! Never thought of tea as a substitute for water Tessa although have dipped a brush in it by accident. The trees are a really interesting shape when pollarded Paul. Here in this region of Spain they grow poplar trees as a crop so are cut down after 15 years. So they are a common sight! As are the beautiful golden orioles that like to nest in them! Will now go and look at Ron’s picture!
I’m  always amazed at what people find to sketch, it the everyday things we use that we tend to dismiss, until someone makes you think thanks Tessa the iron is great, I’ve got a couple of shirts if you would be so kind. I have been out this morning taking photos in the woodland , of old trees to paint and sketch. Did a couple of sketches whilst out for reference. This one is made up from several trees.
I love old trees, full of character.  Tessa, don’t remind me I have loads of ironing to do after my short holiday.  Gillian the golden orioles sound lovely. A quick and not overly successful watercolour sketch today, inspired by some of the scenery in Wales, the weather was so overcast, grey and very dull.
I like the watercolour Hilary, it looks like you have caught the weather and light really well. I think it a good painting reflecting what you have seen and experienced, has a moody look a bit like the weather.
Thank you Paul for your kind comments, we’re always critical of ourselves though aren’t we. I have a few more photos from the trip so hope to try some more, and its good practice and fun too.
I’m enjoying your woodland scenes Dixie. Pop the shirts round later. I’ll do them tomorrow. 🤣. My hubby used to be a postie for some years and I remember having to iron five identical pale blue shirts each week for him- 🥵. Those were the days before posties lived in shorts and more casual gear! Hilary if you’re going to paint in Wales, you need to accept that there will be dull wet days, but they make the sunny ones more enjoyable! I rather like your dull day beach scene. Are we continuing into September? Reckon we should. When we started in January seems like a different world, and I wasn’t sure I’d last til February and here we are still going if not every day!  I’ve been moving stuff around in bedrooms preparing for visitors this week, amazing what you find under beds especially in my ‘studio’ , and it’s been quite satisfying destroying some old canvases. I should probably have painted over them but space needed. At least I can see I’ve made some progress in the last few years. Will try to do something later as last day of August.
