It’s my little girl Honey who died earlier this year. She was like her name… sweet!

my condolences; I feel with, - my one cat died a few months ago also...The picture is very beautiful 🤍
She looks a lovely little dog Gillian. It’s very hard I think to be able to draw/ paint a lost pet, happy and sad memories.
You may think this a bit ..... well, soppy.  But I drew my old dogs; and actually painted the portrait of my splendid pet rat.  But when it came to painting the best dog we ever had - one Sally, who lived to be 19 years old - I had to abandon it; I just couldn't get over the emotion, and come to that I didn't want to paint a poor picture of her (she might have bitten me...).   I am going to make another effort some time - what got me previously was her unique feature: she was an Alsatian/GSD cross; and one of her otherwise Alsatian ears just tipped over at the edge: everything came flooding back - her stealing a gammon joint and running between our legs as she hastened to consume it somewhere secure; her grabbing my father's hand and stopping him when he lost his temper with my brother and went to hit him; her trapping burglars by waiting until they'd broken the glass of our kitchen window, without alerting them to her presence, and then giving them a night to remember when they got through it - buckets and buckets of blood! -; her managing to slide a bolt across the door to let her boyfriend in, and the subsequent litter of Airedale/Alsatian/Labrador cross pups; her confronting the local hunt pack, and causing the lead dog to panic and try hiding beneath the hunt leader's horse, with interesting results and much bad language: the fox got away...   Remembering all that, and more - much more - I just couldn't paint her from memory and photographs: she died in 1979 - maybe I can tackle the job now!
Coo, that pigeon is good! Honey too. My beautiful greyhound died two years ago and I cannot bring myself  to paint his portrait, lest I make a poor attempt.
This is my own quick sketch, of a group of fir trees near my house. I used a charcoal stick.
Well done Bill, I like charcoal for sketching but I get in a right mess! What paper are you using? It looks like Daler-Rowny Ingres. I have a few pads of it for pastel sketches but have also used it for charcoal. I like the protecting sheets between the pages.
It is most terrible to lose a faithful dog Gillian. I wish they could stay with us. Nice charcoal sketch Bill.
Gillian, it's Crawford & Black's watercolour pad, 15" x 10.5". The charcoal is a compressed square stick, about 1/4" on a side. There are some good quality papers around and I've tried a few. My favourite is WH Smith's acrylic paper, which is canvas textured and works well with pastels and charcoal.
What a doggy /Ratty lot we are. Plus Pigeon, plus fir trees.  My second dog was an Alsatian ,Robert,  we adored one another .  Always wondered re Alsatian / GSD   apparently one and the same.... Yours sounds a character .  An amazing age.   I can supply you with a rat or two from the farm across the way.
A 15 - 20 min A4 watercolour sketch with a couple of pen lines add , using up the waste in the pallet set early evening the engine is working hard hence the smoke and steam .
Nice sketch Paul. I'm doing a pigeon painting and thought I would try the Japanese watercolours on watercolour paper for this one. I'm about half way through. I'll finish it tomorrow.
