I really wouldn't be sketching without them now. Everyone to their own likes I guess. Suits my way of sketching at present.
I unfortunately haven’t had time to sketch for the past week , other tasks seem to have come up and need doing suddenly. I set this landscape up for painting last night by won’t get anything done until tomorrow possibly, it’s a new format for me based on the size of a painting that Alan kindly sent me, his is of a Hastings trawler it’s and excellent format and size for boats , will see how it looks as a landscape.
I started this  imaginary scene a while ago and lost it , found it stuck to the back of a painting , no idea how it got there , I added a bit more ink last night and will add sone more with colours in the next day or so .
Taking up the comments about a fude pen. I have invested in one.  Which has coincided with the arrival of a circus. This is my initial sketch.  To be continued.
How are you finding the pen Martin , is it much different to what you have been using or expected it to be .
I'm finding it to be very tricky. but I think with practise I will come to like it. hopefully
Portelet Harbour. Fude pen and Watermans Intense black fountain pen ink
Nice one George.  Disaster has struck me. The ink that came with the pen is not permanent. So ran when I applied watercolor 😬
A nice sunny day turned into a w Very wet one.!
Martin, what Fude pens did you use?. I use automatic filling pens     (and the filling devices would clog using any really permanent ink)       not dip pens. The ones I use you can only really use  with fountain pen ink and they are definately not permanent, I've just tried to wash water over one of mine done months ago and the Ink ran and bled through the paper, so no good for overlaying with watercolour. I should think dip pens would be OK using more peranent inks providing you kept them clean. The times I've used colour on these drawings , I've drawn first with pencil then added watercolour and thenFude pen.
Carbon black ink is permanent, and is water resistant: resistant doesn't mean it won't run at all, and I like to  add a little water to drawings with this ink; it can be a bit sticky inside the pen, but can be washed out successfully with water - especially lukewarm water - and dried with a kitchen towel. If you want an ink that will never yield to water when dry, so far as I know it has to be Indian ink, and you can't use that in anything other than a dip pen, as George says.  I was hoping to find a sepia or bistre ink I could use in a fude pen: they certainly exist, but - they're not water resistant, so far as I've discovered so far. There are good waterproof  sepia and other coloured inks, but they're for dip pens only - they'll destroy any kind of fountain pen, so far as I know. I'd be really interested to hear if anyone has found a coloured ink that is waterproof and can be used in fountain pens  - I want  one!
I’ll have to step in here and make a correction! Not widely known about, but there IS a pen (fountain pen similarity), that can be used with ANY ink, including Indian ink. I’ve bought two of them a few years ago, (slightly different with a range of drawing nibs), I’ve highlighted them in one of my articles in TA many months back. So, what are they? The Ackerman fountain pen, and on my recommendation, quite a few of you bought one, including as I recall Fiona and Lew (where is he by the way!). Check out their website, they’re only available from the States, so postage does bump up the price… a ballpark figure is around £50 inc postage. They’re absolutely brilliant, they take apart easily for cleaning, a few seconds in fact, you can’t go wrong… I’ve tried every type of ink and they just don’t clog or block up… believe me, it’s true! Including the dreaded Indian ink as I said earlier!
