Good  work: does she like it?
Robert,  She asked who is it?
Ah.  Oh dear.... I have a feeling you're nearly always on to a loser when you paint family members - 45 years on, I still remember my Granddad's "is that supposed to be me?"
I think it's a good sketch George. I agree with Robert in some respects. I'll tell you why. Some people may say it's not about obtaining a likeness it's about obtaining a good sketch. I don't agree with the view personally but who am I. I am a self taught amateur. The thing with portraits is, I believe very strongly, they should resemble the live sitter or reference strong enough that they recognise elements of themselves. Now, your portrait, can be easily turned around so the person can say, yes, that's me. If you want to put an original reference up, I will put my workings through the process in graphite and go through the stages as a WIP.
Actually Denise it's a portrait of my wife as she was a few years ago and she was joking when she asked me who it was. It's not a bad likeness really. The first one I did like this was a shaded  a little to dark so I lightened it.
George, I always get” smart remarks” when I do a family member - my daughter said she looked “ stoned” ( I thought she looked thoughtful), my brother thought he looked like someone from a “ wanted” poster. In your selfie above you look kindly - when I do a selfie it’s so brutally honest that I look about 10 years older ! ( or perhaps I really do look like that 😆)
Thank you for your replies Denise and Marjorie, June really was only joking when she asked who the portrait was intended to be. Marjorie when she read your comment about my self portrait looking kindly, she fell about laughing. I don't know why. It  was done a long time ago and I no longer have the beard, but although she threatens to throw it away every couple of years, I still wear the same jumper when I'm Painting.
The “ other half” tends to be quite cruel ( I have my moments too) but a bit of humour is crucial. Yes George, I knew she was joking.
II have been reading my Rowland Hilder books again , I always get fired up to have a go at a similar sketch etc , this is a imaginary scene based on his work. Might add a bit of colour at some point . Dip pen , Indian ink and water .

A great master to learn from, and well done for having a go but in your own style. Looks okay generally, but I think you’ve kept adding to the composition, it’s a bit crowded out with buildings.  Remember the rule, keep the background simple, so less detail, just a tonal tree line and buildings looks better. Less is more… as they say! One I did a while back now, I’ve kept detail to a minimum…and gone in heavy with my tonal scale.
I agree I started fiddling with it .  Added a bit of colour, quite like the added wash .

I like the wash too Paul, it really lifts it.
