This painting is of the Old Zyds, the Kolk (canal) in Amsterdam. My reference image was an historical photograph thought to have been taken somewhere between 1890 and 1900. I was drawn to the perspective lines of the windows and the architecture of the buildings themselves which, to my way of thinking, gave an old world feeling. I tried using complementary colours to bring what I hoped would be a strong sense of zest.
