Two of Van Gogh’s favourite things in life were sunflowers and absinthe accompanied by his favourite colours, yellow and blue – all of this not necessarily in that order. There was no doubt, however, about his partiality for absinthe – 148 proof alcohol often drizzled over sugar to improve the taste. In a letter to his brother Theo, Vincent wrote: “If the storm within gets too loud, I take a glass too much to stun myself”. In this digital oil I attempt to capture the spectrum of Van Gogh’s emotional range from high euphoria to the encroaching darkness that eventually swamped his very soul.
