wow Wib, this is so beautiful, amazing and wonderful colours, love the liveliness of the painting :)

Nailed it in one goal Wib. Great statement, FIFA crap or not, just as we all learned wherever we were. I can remember 15 a side at the park with coats as goals.

Wonderful painting Wib, great colours and dynamism in boys. Very well painted.

Very exciting and lovely picture.

I would go as far as to say this is one of the key paintings of the new millenium. The arrangement of the boys is comparable i think to velasquez. A triumph.

Great sense of movement Wib and wonderful light - it's electric in every way.

This is such compelling viewing, vivid, full of tension, and so well painted. Superb, Wib. Nice to meet you...I lived in Guelph Ontario for 6 years in the late 50's, not so far away from where you are now.

Beautiful colour and content Wib....the light you have caught in it is just fabulous giving the painting a surreal, luminous quality.

Thank you, Maria, Derek, Cesare and Shirley for your encouraging comments.

Thanks Michael, although I'm certain I'm not in the same pitch as Velasquez. Also thank you Marjorie and Ruth - yes, Ruth, London is a little over 100 kms from Guelph - a beautiful city. Thank you also, Chandra, for your comment on light - I was hoping that I could catch some of that luminous quality you mentioned.

As a Canadian, my mother tongue sport is, of course, hockey. Only in recent times have I begun to appreciate “The Beautiful Game” – soccer here in North America but football almost everywhere else. I recently took a course on the history of football and learned about the great work of FIFA despite the shenanigans of some of its top leadership. What impressed me most was its work among kids in poor neighbourhoods on every continent – aid in social programs, education as well as sport. In part, it was my inspiration for this painting of some street kids honing their skills in a make-up game – perhaps dreaming of something greater.
