The Beautiful Game
As a Canadian, my mother tongue sport is, of course, hockey. Only in recent times have I begun to appreciate “The Beautiful Game” – soccer here in North America but football almost everywhere else. I recently took a course on the history of football and learned about the great work of FIFA despite the shenanigans of some of its top leadership. What impressed me most was its work among kids in poor neighbourhoods on every continent – aid in social programs, education as well as sport. In part, it was my inspiration for this painting of some street kids honing their skills in a make-up game – perhaps dreaming of something greater.
