Really interested to read about the walnut ink, and what a beautiful result - I love the bleached branch!

You have painted this beautifully as described

A beautiful shaped tree Martin. Love how you have used your pen work to describe the calligraphy of the finer extended twigs and branches. The bleached branches really give the piece depth. I like to use walnut ink, a think it has a less solid effect, and also it’s warm and subtle compared to Indian ink. When you bought your walnut ink, did you see the walnut darkening medium ? It is a more densely pigmented medium and it is excellent for the more concentrated areas of shadows etc. it’s worth the investment. I use the Tom Norton ink.

Great work!

Top class work Martin.

Good choice of ink - it does take more work, but that's no bad thing, because using a black can lead you to think a drawing is finished when it really isn't. Great tree, beautifully drawn - and we need to celebrate our trees: too many don't: Shrewsbury Council has just agreed to cut down the Darwin Oak, to make way for a bypass; when what's needed is a bypass around the Philistine council. Trees, despite many of them being over 500 years old, have no statutory protection. They should have: Shrewsbury's by pass will soon become so congested that it'll serve no useful purpose at all, as is the way so often. Sorry to hijack your post: but it really is scandalous that these great old trees can be felled because they're "in the way", while certain architectural monstrosities of humankind's making are sacrosanct. Anyway, it's a fine drawing, and I hope YOUR tree will long outlive half-wit planners.

Beautiful drawing Martin

Yeah, I love this shape a lot. Unfortunately, I know the Doncaster only from airport view…

Beautifully drawn Martin , definitely one of my favourite subjects.

One of my favourite subjects ! You have depicted this majestic oak wonderfully.

Thank you so much David Sarah Heather Fiona - I didn’t use any medium but thanks for the tip - Mark Lewis Robert - your rant is forgiven as k feel that way about our precious trees - Russell PogArt Dixie and Avril I value you comments immensely

This is beautiful, love it Martin

Thanks Cheryl and Spencer. Much appreciated

Thanks very much for your valued comment Dmitry

Fabulous drawing Martin of such A great tree! I also like the walnut ink, just a pity that it isn’t waterproof… so an issue if you want to add a wash, which I invariably do.

Thanks Alan. I usually apply a wash and I’ve just spoiled a good drawing in walnut ink by muddying it with a wash

One of the magnificent ancient oaks at Lindholme Hall near Doncaster. I love the way the huge fallen branches have been left and appear almost bleached. Having seen some splendid works on POL using Walnut Ink I thought I’d try it and this is my first effort. I found it very different to black inks and needed a lot more working for the darker areas. I suppose that should be obvious. Anyhow pleased with the result. I used an old Parker fountain pen and white gouache. On Arches cp watercolour paper 12x9”
