Haxey Hood has taken place since 14th century every year on 6th January (except during wars and pandemics). It is a contest between four pubs in Haxey and Westwoodside where I live and basically is a huge scrum trying to push the hood to the landlord of the contestants pub. Wikipedia explains it better. This painting is based on the snowy winter of 2010 and shows Haxey church and groups of onlookers who sensibly tend to favour a drop of something rather than getting hot and dirty. Acrylic on canvas 80x60cm
