Attingham Park

Attingham Park

Oh Thea this has brought back memories! I also lived a sort drive away when we lived in Shrewsbury and it was a favourite place we often visited with friends and family. Lovely painting and the cars are a master touch! These paintings would make lovely greetings cards.

Lovely work once again Thea, I think this is one of your best. Good idea to include the vintage cars, a nice lead into the picture and so well painted.

You must be very pleased with the way this beauty has turned out. The positioning of the well drawn cars is perfect and I love the towering columns at the front of the building and the light on the side. Super work Thea and also, I'm looking forward now to seeing the next 'experiment' from you..no pressure intended..lol

Thank you very much Christine, Stephen and Louise for such positive comments. I walked my dogs at Attingham for nearly 20 years and they have all loved the place. However, lately the NT decided that the house should make more money and it has been developed turned into a bit of a low key theme park in my view, where dogs aren't so welcome. A great shame as the peace of solitude of walking around the Mile Walk, through the rhododendron bushes and alongside the river was almost spiritual in it's beauty. I miss that.

This is again such a charming and ever so beautiful painting Thea and the little bit of history included makes it even better. You live in a lovely part of the country with all these great places to see and visit. I agree with you that NT should not turn them into theme parks but it seems to be the trend now. People need action all the time and cannot sit down in a lovely garden and just enjoy the beauty of the surroundings.

Charming painting, crisp and clean, enjoying the background stories to this series as well, I went here when we were members of The National Trust, many moons ago.

Thank you very much Satu and Debs - very kind of you to leave such nice comments.

This is a nice pen and wash piece Thea, like the vintage car lead in towards the main building.

Lovely little painting.Particularly like the handling of the foreground, and how it draws you towards the building.

Nice one Thea - the cars really make it.

I love this Thea! Contour drawing is super, but your usual style has much appeal too. I think you have a lot of dynamism here, in the way you used your lovely palette to add structure, atmosphere and vibrance to your work.

Thank you very much Graham, David, Michael and Seok for your positive feedback. However, having now done the contour drawing challenge I am wondering if I could have produced a more dynamic drawing if I concentrated more on what I was looking at rather than looking at my hand drawing? I shall try with the next one.

Lovely and fresh Thea! A super reminder of all your dog walking days there.

Thea, I am so sorry to hear of your loss, coincidently a dear friend of ours passed away suddenly on the same day so I have some idea of what you are going through. Take care and I look forward to seeing you back on POL when you feel ready, thank you for letting me know.

This is the 4th in my series of pen and wash paintings of locally interesting buildings and is the National Trust's Attingham Park which is just down the road from me - a lovely Palladian house with parkland by Humphrey Repton. I visit the park often with my dog (who actually thinks it is part of her back garden!). They often have events at the house - hot air ballooning, festivals and, as in this painting, a rally of sports cars from days gone by. I thought it made the house a bit more relevant to have something of it's calender of events included in the work. I did this one before I started contour drawing - wish I had used that method to draw it as I feel it could have made the drawing more dynamic. Back to experimenting tomorrow!

I am a watercolourist first and foremost as I love the qualities of the medium, its riskiness and unpredictability. I started painting about 8 years ago and it has now become an integral part of my life. Hopefully, I will continue to paint into my dotage as I am given to understand that you can…
