A beautiful sunny feel with this and so lovely on a dark morning.

Good 'holiday' feel to this. Just the sort of place I'd like to be this morning! I like the addition of the flag and touch of orange on the parasol (nearly said umbrella then lol) I like the horizontal positioning of the sea and buildings, they sit together well.

A lovely little painting again Thea! I can see that you enjoy this pen and wash method of producing excellent works of art. You have a very light touch with your pen and always use such soft and gentle colours. Delightful!

It's interesting how vignettes work (and this one does), with all the space around, you would think it would look odd, I suppose our imagination adds the rest! Which is what art is all about.

This is lovely. The colours are so fresh. It looks sunny and light and right now I wish I was there.

Another beautiful watercolour Thea, lovely composition and colours

How lovely - 'wish you where here?' I certainly do!!

Thank you so much Annette, Carole, Louise, Satu, Stephen, Dawn, Petra and Debs for all your encouragement. Still learning with this medium but loving it. Perhaps it is my calling after all! Annette, I do have a problem with the white of the paper showing as white as I leave a lot of it in my paintings and it does need to be shown accurately. However, I have tried and tried but it never quite works out - what am I doing wrong I wonder. Also the paper for this one is more of a creamy shade, being in my Moleskine sketchbook( if you are familiar with the paper they use). I edit my paintings in Snapseed mostly but don't do much to them - just try and make them look like the original. If you have any tips to pass on then please do as it would be really useful. The other problem, of course, is what people actually see on their own individual screens. They are all calibrated differently so to try and accommodate that is a further issue. I get it looking ok on mine, but goodness knows what other people see.

Super work Thea!! I just love it.

Thank you so much, Mark.

It looks BRILLIANT on my screen Thea....as do the colours and the pen work. Great stuff!

Thank you so much Fiona and Helen. I feel almost guilty because I am finding the pen and wash quicker to do than proper paintings and seem to have a lot less angst attached to them. I wonder what Freudian thing that means?

I like the line and wash technique here. You have made everything well defined and clear-always enjoy seeing your work.

Another beauty Thea. Well done.

You've certainly conveyed the feeling of sunlight on those buildings Thea, another winner :)

This could almost be a mosaic Thea, a tiny sapphire! I confess to preferring your recent more 'bled' (I hate the 'loose' word!) works which I find warmer. Slightly deeper and warmer shadows perhaps? Obviously a labour of love - so much more admirable for the Advent circumstances in which it was conceived!

Thank you, Kim, for another very insightful comment. You always make me think about what I am doing! I know what you mean about the lack of looseness (that dreaded word!) in this one. I don't always have a lot of control with how a painting turns out as I might set off with a game plan, but a hidden hand seems to take over and I respond to what I am painting. This scene so precise and crisp that I think I responded to that which is why it hasn't got those bleeds and spatters that I normally employ. All about the gut reaction I suppose.

P.S. The shadows could have been deeper but I am a dreadful wimp about shadows and skies for some reason. Must man up over these!

Great work Thea, love the colours in this the way they contrast so beautifully, the buildings are super as well, you are doing so well with these pen and ink works now

Now that's a completely fresh take on a frequently painted subject. Stunning in its simplicity and beautiful sunlit atmosphere. An absolute winner, Thea!

Thank you very much Annette, Ros, Seok and Gudrun for your very nice comments.

I know Santorini has been done to death, but I rather fancied the challenge of the drawing (which sent me cross eyed at times). I just added a bit of wash and hoped that it would convey the bright sunlight on the gleaming white buildings. I am really enjoying immersing myself in pen and wash, rather than just doing the odd one now and again, as I feel it is the only way I am going to progress with the medium. Done in my sketchbook. (P.S. Apologies that I am struggling to find a moment to comment on all the great work on the gallery. I am trying, but life is beyond hectic at the moment, which is why I am finally getting around to posting this one at midnight - and I thought retirement was going to be restful, lol!)

About the Artist
Thea Cable

I am a watercolourist first and foremost as I love the qualities of the medium, its riskiness and unpredictability. I started painting about 8 years ago and it has now become an integral part of my life. Hopefully, I will continue to paint into my dotage as I am given to understand that you can…
