Smashing painting Tessa good luck with the rest of the world!

Thank you Willie!!🤣

Superb Tessa , there was almost double that and more hedgerow in Britain till the EU paid to have them removed , now fortunately the trend is to pant hedgerows . Your path of the country is blessed with them.

There's a lovely immediacy to this piece that makes it very lively and vibrant. Nicely done, Tessa!

Love the idea of you walking and painting your way around all these hedgerows!

And that is only in England.I remember them being rooted up, so short sighted.. like your pic Tessa. Will be getting its leaves and blossom soon.

I remember someone was once commissioned to draw every stone of Hadrian’s Wall, so this could be your new life goal. Nice picture.

Thank you all so much. Am away from home til later so will read properly then. X

Great for encouraging nature and so much nicer tan fences. Great result Tessa.

Love the painting Tessa. Took an interest in them as a kid watching birds nesting in them. 70 odd years on I still remember some of those beautifully made nests.

Wow, I didn't know that! Well, you've made a very good start, will look forward to any further hedgerows. Perhaps with some typical English flowers?

Thank you Dixie. I didn’t realise that about the EU! Yes we certainly have a good show of hedges here. My husbands friend (retired farmer) judges hedge laying competitions every year, quite a big thing round here. ( we don’t get out much!) 🤣

Many thanks Seok.

Thank you Heather for that thought, it could take me a while…!

Thanks Sylvia, and that’s a pleasing thought , buds of Spring and all that! Can’t come soon enough.

Andy, are you serious about Hadrians Wall! Nightmare thought, although if it paid…. Thank you. I do have a bit of an interest in hedgerows!

Thank you Carole. I did wonder about tan fences, then I realised what you meant! 🤣

Thank you George. Yes a birds nest is a wondrous thing, so cleverly made.

Thank you Sandra. Now that’s another idea!

Well, I made it through January with my daily painting self-challenge. Only missed one day when I wasn’t well. Thank you so much to all who have commented, encouraged, and given me ideas for further work. X

That’s a sturdy hedge Tessa! I don’t think Paul’s correct about the EU paying to have them removed….hedges are still protected in the EU. It’s this government which no longer funds their upkeep .

Ps. Well done for keeping at it through Jan!

Thanks Marjorie, and I think you’ve kept up also!

Well done Tessa to keep it up. Hedges are great little eco environments aren’t they

Many thanks Martin and Spencer. Yes they are great Martin!

This is full of energy. I love hedgerows too Tessa. For Christmas I was given a beautiful book called ‘Nests’ by Susan Ogilvy and it’s full of stunning paintings of birds nests. It may be of interest to yourself and George who commented.

Thank you Julie. I will look that up. If you like that sort of thing there is a wonderful book called English Pastoral by James Reebanks.

I love your choice of subject. Hedgerows are vital for so many reasons. I live in France and some of the flooding in the Calais area could have been less if the fields weren't just huge bare lands ! You have a lot of lovely paintings to browse.

Thank you so much Advil for your interest and kind comments. I didn’t actually know about the flooding around Calais, but we hear a lot recently about your farmers protesting. We live in strange times! I admire your lovely work also.

According to a recent study/survey the UK has 240000miles of hedgerows ! Enough to stretch around the world. My A4 on paper is just a view of about 2 metres. I’m not going to attempt the whole lot but may do some more to this and other pieces of hedge. Started from a plein air pen sketch.

About the Artist
Tessa Gwynne

I have returned to painting over the last few years having relocated from Cardiff to the Cotswolds in 2009 and joined the Guiting Power Art Group. Although I did a year's Foundation Course at art college after leaving school, I hadn’t painted much in the interim, except for a few attempts here and…
