Wowsers! Such detail! This must have require such patience.....a fantastic painting!

Really stunning Michael. A great narrative painting (and your personal story too).

Superb painting and a great story to go with it.

lots of action going on here.

Hadn’t finished commenting. You’ve painted the sea wonderfully and the boats. Great painting Michael.

Dramatic. A really top class work Michael. Worthy of a place in a forces museum.

Stunning!

My late father would have been in one of those boats - we had a holiday in the 1960s on the River Thames in a rather lumpy old vessel named the Maid Mignonette - which he discovered had been one of the boats at Dunkirk ferrying soldiers like him back to England. I've seen a few other paintings of the retreat, including one from a German wartime publication - the picture was entitled Der glorreiche Ruckzug, and intended to be a satire on the 'glorious retreat': but actually, it was quite powerful in its way.

Superb work, Micheal. So much to admire.

My thanks to everyone here. It's good of you all to take the time to comment. I really do appreciate your enthusiastic support.

The steam tug Challenge is shown hove too picking up a last lot of troops from an RN whaler. Two other smaller vessels batter their way off the beaches loaded with exhausted infantry. I've a particular attachment to this one since my Dad was one of those left behind to stall the German advance to the beaches. A member of 2nd Bttn DLI he was badly wounded and became a POW 24 x 16 inches on board. For sale
