Super portrait Satu.

Thank you Gudrun and thank you Joanne for the kind comments.

I didn't see the other version Satu and all credit to you for using pastel/charcoal? and a different way of working. This must have taken some time. It's not easy getting a true likeness of someone is it and as I don't know what Seurat looked like, I can't really say if you have. (my knowledge of the 'old masters' is virtually nil..I always recognise paintings and yet haven't a clue usually who painted them) All the shading on his face is very good as is his intense expression. The way you've drawn his curly hair is really good as well. He was a good looking man from your picture even though I dislike beards! Another question..what made you want to draw him? Was it his good looks or just a personal challenge?

I liked your other sketch Satu and I definitely like this one. The hair and beard are expertly done.

Thank you very much Louise for the long comment. There's only one photo of Seurat and I found it in an old art magazine. I have been studying all kinds of methods with different tutors this past year and they have made me draw with charcoal and I have started to like it. This portrait was just practice and took me about 4-5hours. I think that the likeness is pretty good. I still mainly do my semi abstracts but also enjoy different challenges. Thanks again Louise! Thank you Adele very much for commenting again!

I like the way you say that the tutors 'made' you draw with charcoal and it took you 4 to 5 hours... Just as well you enjoyed it! LOL (you know that I like a challenge as well but have no charcoal as yet!)

This is definitely the better portrait Satu. It feels as though you know him a bit more ( all that time spent, you must do ). The hair and the beard are especially good - strange thought....what would he think if he could see this and read what people are saying about him!

Beautiful portrait with great likeness, Satu, and very great use of charcoal, a medium not so easy.

The white adds beautifully to his hair and beard Satu

Could I challenge you Louise!!?? Thank you Marjorie for your comment and yes, I do feel as if I knew him better now. The more i look at his photo the more I see details and realise what I could have drawn better but that's the whole point, learning to observe. Thank you very much Cesare and Carole for your kind comments.

LOL Satu, when I said that my knowledge of the 'old masters' was virtually nil, there is one that I recognise and have begun to dislike intensely. That's Vermeer's 'Girl with the pearl earring' and as a POL user, you'll probably know why!

Yes, I know what you mean Louise. x

The time spent has paid off Satu it's a fine portrait indeed. I admire anyone who can capture a likeness, especially in a medium that is quite restricted. I tried doing a portrait once and found it very difficult. I'm enjoying your charcoal work, hope there is more to come.

I liked the first one, Satu, but comparing both (after clicking on your "View full profile" below your portrait), I think this is definitely better :) Mia

Thank you ever so much Fiona and Mia for commenting again. Very much appreciated.

Great variety of tone and marks culminating in a strong portrait

Thank you very much David.

I had to post this again because I have made so many adjustments after buying a piece of white pastel. Now the beard looks much better and I've also redrawn his left eye which was too big.
