This tonal pastel painting was created on Canson Mi-Teintes 'Touch' 350gsm pastel paper, chosen for the fantastic and responsive surface for both hard and soft pastels (different brands) i was using to create it. Working from dark to light (the colour of the support was black) the painting emerged for my students at Higham Hall with me earlier in the year on an expressive drawing mixed media art holiday. In my 2 hour evening demo the study was done. the following day the students worked outdoors in a similar way and the results were fantastic! Guess what? Black pastel was used on the black paper as well. See if you can see where!
