Winter, Newlands Valley- Cumbria

Can see the snow cloud coming in, harsh weather conveyed very well in your painting. I like the strong spontaneous marks.

A stunning piece. The variety of marks and line is extraordinary, and the composition and tonal work are excellent.

I don't know what you've used here - might guess that it's a mix of media on toned paper, and probably basically pastel - but it's a very powerful piece.

Thanks for the comments everyone.<br /><br />Hi Robert J,<br />Let me answer for you. <br /><br />The painting started with #Derwent charcoal and water soluble graphite blocks. <br /><br />I quickly moved on to #Nitram charcoal, and then washes of black Gouache followed by compressed charcoal, black soft pastel and other grey pastels all in a quick succession and switching back and forth. <br /><br />Soft white pastel #Unison and #Rembrandt was then added using the virgin white paper remaining to be the sharpest highlights. <br /><br />White Gouache was added in different areas quite opaquely and then back and forth with different media mentioned to sharpen line, soften line and conclude. <br /><br />A similar technique was used at #Patchings this year in the big marquee supported by #Canson for my demonstration. Those who came to watch absolutely loved it!<br /><br />Hope that helps.
