I do like this painting, especially the composition allowing your eyes to follow the natural flow of the road. It reminds me a little of the great Irish artist Paul Henry and his Irish travel posters.

I do like this very much, Val. The road leading the eye is brilliant and the rolling green hills are super.I would perhaps tone down the distant hills a little bit more to create more recession, but that's a really small matter in the totality of the painting, which works pretty well.

This is lovely Val. You've achieved great perspective with the receding clouds and the road disappearing into the distance. I also like the sunlight falling on the middle distance hills

Lovely, fascinating landscape!!

Val, This is a great and very well done piece. The composition is super. It is just beautiful that the colours of the sky echo the colours of the road. I also agree with Seok Yam that the rolling green hills are done so lovely. The only minor suggestion I have is: If you can carry a bit of the blue (up on the hill, right side of the water) to the dark green tree in the middle of the painting. Best regards.

Lovely light airy feel to this painting with great depth, well done Val!

A lovely landscape Val but with the copyright blurb across the sky it makes it look like an old railway poster, I rather like old railway posters by the way. : )

Nice work Val. I like it.

A lovely journey to the sea. Great colours.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to advise and comment, very much appreciated. Tony and William, someone on another forum mentioned it looked like a travel poster so I'll take that as a compliment, thankyou. Seok and Yu Ping, I shall heed your expert advice and make a few modifications, thankyou both as well.

It has great depth, the only point I'd make (and only because you ask for suggestions) is that I might have been inclined to simplify the sky; there are several layers, but all of them seem to be of much the same tone. Reducing these might strengthen the overall impact of the image. Isn't it easy to criticize someone else's painting, when you can't begin to evaluate your own.......?

Thanks Robert for taking the time to look and make suggestions. There is slightly more tone in the sky which the camera hasn't picked up but I agree with you it needs more and I'll have another go at it when I tackle the other areas that need addressing. Like you say,it's not easy to see what is wrong in our own paintings so please feel free to criticise whenever you want as it can only help improve my paintings.

You're quite an artist Val. I've never seen work from anyone using so many diverse mediums, and so many different subjects. Very impressive. I'm assuming you're a freelance artist - and do this for a living?

Painted in alkyd oils from a sketch and photo taken on site last summer. I rarely do landscapes in any other medium than pastel so I look forward to any constructive criticism you may like to offer.

About the Artist
Val Kenyon

I am a self taught artist or, as I like to say, I'm "unrestricted by formal teaching" which probably explains my mish mash of styles. I paint in most media, watercolour, gouache, oil, coloured pencil and my favourite, soft pastels. I'm inspired by the Scottish landscape, nature and animals and…
