I love your foliage and grasses, Peter, and I like the detail in the mid-ground, contrasts nicely with the quiet sky and water sections. Colours subtle and harmonious, as always, perfectly convey a grey autumnal day

Your thoughts on my effort today reminded me that I'd meant to comment on this, as I like it a lot, but then forgot. I wish I could see it full size & on paper! I really admire the sky, and I don't think that the middle ground is too complicated - my eye is immediately drawn to the bridge & the far bank, rather than the tree & its reflection, so for me it had to have things to say. I'm guessing that that far bank is very important in the composition, since the bridge is pretty well centre on both axes . My only thought is that perhaps the bank might have been a little bit more varied, rather than less complicated, to keep the eye hovering around that central area longer. Re-reading this, it almost sounds as though I know what I'm talking about, so I'll stop now & not give the game away!!

Thanks Bill for your comments, actually what made me want to paint this scene was the tree, it's reflections and the early morning light, the bridge was not even in my thoughts. I wish I had left it out. In fact I probably emphasised it to much, especialy with its central position on a portrait layout. The sky should have been more intense and I should have concentrated on the atmosphere more. From only having one other comment to yours, I think it proves that I didn't get this one right. Now that you have brought this to the forefront I think I'll repaint this and see what reactions I get. Thanks again Bill.

Took a photo of this scene the other mourning, whilst walking the dogs. Just had to give it a go. Found it quite a challenge trying to get the depth of colour in the sky and water, had to do 3 washes. Hope I have not over complicated the middle ground, just got totally involved with trying to capture the start of autumn. Archer hot pressed. 35 x 25cm
