Thank you, I've finally found a happy medium between using charcoal and pastel together. I don't know why it was such a problem for me before. I used to cause myself so much angst worrying that it was neither one nor the other so I haven't combined the two for ages. Then I tried with Romeo the bird drawing and it all clicked. There is a very strong charcoal drawing underneath this which makes laying down the pastel freer, more expressive and just fun.
