The foreground is a bit darker than your usual style. I think in all honesty I would have left it at the paler tones which are surrounding the front boat as when I hold my hands over the darker section on the left and right, it seems to make the boats stand out better. I can totally see what you were trying to achieve and 'the establishment' always recommends more definition in the foreground and paler shades in the background. However, rules were made to be broken and in most of your works you very successfully break this rule and this is part of their charm. I also find that if you haven't made an area dark enough at the first hit, it is risky to try and darken it as sometimes you end up lifting some of the under-lying pigment which then mixes with the new pigment and the effect can get a bit muddy. I know you are keen to keep your colours clean and bright (as I am) and this is something I have learned as I have tried to correct areas that are too light. Often it's best just to leave them and change the emphasis of the painting. Sorry to bang on but I do understand what your dilemma is. Having said all that, I think it is a delighful painting with all the charm and spontaneity that you bring to all your work. I just love your bravery and the way that you just attack a subject and do your thing. Keep it up!

I knew i had made this mistake in the foreground as soon as i had put the paint on, as you say you can't alter it once it is on. I agree with you by putting your hands across the bottom part it improves the recession of the painting. We learn by our mistakes as you say, thank you once again for your kind comments.
