I don't know about religiously, but the Dissolution just wasn't a good thing, was it? And Henry VIII really was a complete toad... When you think of the legions of modern buildings that so much deserve a visit from the cannon, bulldozer and wrecking ball, what happened to these great constructions was pretty near to unforgiveable. Not that forgiveness would have mattered to that great, fat, syphilitic old tyrant. It makes me come over all Republican....

The shattered remnants of Sawley Abbey set against the brooding backdrop of Pendle Hill. Founded in 1147 by Cistercian monks, it was destroyed in the Dissolution in 1536 during the reign of Henry VIII. In 2009 the ruins featured in an episode of the TV series 'The Tudors'. In the care of English Heritage. Pen and ink, ink wash on gesso textured watercolour paper.
