St John the Baptist, Kirk Hammerton, York
The church is of Saxon origin and although the exact date of its construction is uncertain it was probably around AD 950. Some of the enormous stones at the base of the tower show signs of Roman working. The church was greatly extended on its north side in the 19th century, starting around 1834. Before this date the church would have looked virtually unchanged since medieval times. On 2nd July 1644 the Battle of Marston Moor took place just a few miles away. Tradition has it that many of those slain were interred in pits in the churchyard - large numbers of damaged skeletons were unearthed in 1926. Mixed media, mainly pen and ink wash with a little oil pastel. 14.5" x 10.5"
