Thank you for the comments everyone. I primed the board with gesso and a red earth wash, so the colour shows through when I want it to. The original photo is beautiful, quite different in colours. You can see it on Ruth's website. I saw it at the back of the Guardian where people send in seasonal photos and asked Ruth's permission to use it as a reference.
