Heather, it’s not really me doing them….I’m copying an artist….but you probably know that. You can learn rather a lot though by doing just that.

A terrific study Marjorie, I like this style very much for portraits. I think it’s the almost angular shapes and brush strokes that make up the features, light and shadowed areas. I also agree with you about learning from studying and copying artists that you admire. I found Davy’s year of copying the style (not the paintings) of the impressionists very informative.

Good work Marjorie. It’s an unforgiving style isn’t it.

His technique - Freud's, obviously - made somewhat 'easier' by his use of Cremnitz White - you've done well with what I imagine was Titanium. In fact - very well.

Interesting, isn’t it, to study the different styles. We have a project coming up at our art club, done it before but we have new members, which is to copy a famous painting or part of. Now I would normally paint something I like, which attracts me…..Freud’s work, although it is undoubtedly worthy of admiration, is not in this category for me. However, it’s good to go “ off piste” from time to time….I find myself quite drawn to his approach, his palette ( I haven’t the kind of paints etc so it would never come close, never mind the skill or vision) but I’d like to have a go at a different approach to portraits…..will my husband forgive me for the “ unforgiving Style” Martin? Yes, of course, we’ll probably have a laugh.

I’m glad I read the info’ below as I was perplexed over this painting being yours Marjorie. You probably learn a lot from such exercises but I so enjoy the paintings with your special touch, so please don’t take too long, to return to your lovely style.

Carole, that’s very nice of you….but don’t we all have an element of dissatisfaction about our own “ style” at times? I know I’d never paint like this, I’m looking at something different - vision wise and mood wise - but whenever we study something, a little something is taken, something which we admire. Hopefully it doesn’t change what we do too much but possibly adds to it. I’m obviously in a very philosophical mood at the moment….rabitting on!

I’m sure your right Marjorie and it’s good to explore other artists’ works and learn something. I do think it’s wonderful to find a style and delve into our souls to develop it. Maybe it’s a bit like handwriting, you can improve it but it remains intrinsically yours. You’r lucky to have found your style. I’m still struggling to get there. Happy painting Marjorie.

Very interesting study Marjorie. I”M glad my wrinkles aren’t that bad! On the whole I like the planes, but the nose is a bit phallic!
