Special eyes

Excellent painting Marjorie, l do love to see your portraits they are always so beautifully done.

Superb painting

Unlike the original I couldn’t use thick paint because It’s so small.

Pretty darn good Marjorie! The eyes definitely have it. A successful experiment I would think.

Being small it was achievable and I’d recommend anyone to while away an enjoyable couple of hours like this.

Super painting as always Marjorie.

This is great, Marjorie.

I had a friend - sadly, he commited suicide a good many years ago - who did paint small pictures using very thick paint (his name was Barry Rawlings: his work is still out there, but rare). He used lead white, which was freely available then. When the paint had dried, you could actually pick the painting up by its surface ridges; he also painted on spiders' webs - perhaps slightly easier in Australia, where he settled (and died), but such was his delicacy of touch he painted on the more serviceable British spiders' webs.... how long such works lasted I don't know. I was reminded of him because he also painted a copy of this Rembrandt: I wish I knew where it is now. I wouldn't use thick paint with Titanium White, though, if only because it would take so long to dry; and you've still got a very creditable impression of him, right down to the bulbous nose, with - presumably - T. White.

A superb piece of work, Marjorie.

I can’t paint small… what a cracking job you’ve done here Marjorie!

Marjorie you’ve achieved an excellent likeness of the great man and your palette is perfect.

Instantly recognisable. As ever, excellent work Marjorie.

Fabulous work and so small too. Love it, hats off to you.

Thanks everyone! Robert - at the moment I only have T. White - it’s the “ safe” version, whatever that is. Consistency is very thin.

A superb piece, with excellent brushwork. Super work, Marjorie.

Excellent Marjorie. Rembrandt would immediately recognise himself.

Oh Trevor, I’m cringing!🫣

Fantastic painting Marjorie, you've captured that 'world weary and slightly melancholic' look in his eyes. It gets even better with every lingering glance!

So beautifully done.

Thank you for all your great comments.

And you have got the eyes perfectly. Superb painting

Superb, an amazing range of colours that all work.

Thank you once again - Thalia, Richard, Spencer and Paul.

Oil, 6”x6” on unprimed claybord. An enjoyable hour or two copying someone’s eyes from a famous painting. Claybord is interesting….though I don’t think I would undertake a large piece of work because it is very absorbent. However, I don’t see the point of priming it, it is meant for experimental work I think.
