Magenta, yellow and black

Magenta, yellow and black

Interesting colour combination - very striking. I use magenta a great deal, but I do find that blue (preferably a phthalo/cyan) is invaluable. In fact, magenta is often made using quinacridone which is also sold as permanent Rose Madder. Wouldn't be without it - in oils or acrylic! (I have a replacement watercolour half pan of the stuff somewhere but I'm not sure where :-S)

The lurker has disappeared lol. Interesting colour choice Louise. I have magenta and use it quite a lot in flower paintings

You've made me laugh Val! I'm not at all keen on this colour combination Amanda but felt that I had to stick to just the three colours to see what happened. Magenta with other colours is good, but not with the yellow I used here. I use a lot of rose madder and the quinacridone shades I just love. I always feel that I have to try these things out for myself!

I actually quite like the effect, the yellow adds a lovely warmth to it. I agree though that they are not colours you would usually use together. Saying that I have had to try it out too, as usual though I have painted objects that are that colour!

Magenta is one of my favourites. Good on you trying them out Louise, very unusual combination.

Louise, I'm so glad you cleared up the lack of the lurker in your last one, I was thinking perhaps I should have gone to specsavers! It isn't a colour combination I'm keen on, must say. However it doesn't matter what combination of colours you use for your city scenes, they always look atmospheric and lively. This one is no exception....still looks right to me! Having said that, remember I've got dodgy eyes lol.

I have to agree. It is not easy on the eye; not that it always should be, but there are ways of making a painting vibrant and exciting without making you feel a bit off! However, as Fiona has mentioned it still works and has that atmoshpere.

I always feel that I shouldn't really say anything derogatory about my own work but as this is an experimental quick painting, I can. I'll just say that the colours suggested don't work well together to me and now I know ..! Thank you Christine, Carole, Gudrun and Fiona for your thoughts on this one!

Nice one Louise. I love a lot about this - the bands of flat washes, the windows etc. There is something magical about the yellow right hand windows especially the second one from the right that has caught my eye.

Thanks Joseph and really? Now that's a surprise and thanks!

Tonally this a great painting to me.Lovely rich colours.

This makes me think of an area of sleazy Soho at night - don't know why, but that's how it comes over to me. Great colours for conveying debauchery I think!! You know it's a good painting when it transports your viewer to a very different place (and I have to add that I have never done anything sleazy in Soho or anywhere else for that matter, lol!) Powerful stuff, Louise.

Very impressive, Louise.

An unusual combination, Louise, but it's worked pretty well here. The colors seem to suit you bold style.

Thank you David, Thea, Mia, Amanda and Seok. Comments from you all are always appreciated.

I like the combination Louise! It gives the painting a feeling of strength !

I read an interesting letter last night in an old copy of the Artist mag quoting an artist who thought that magenta was a 'hideous' colour. The writer of the letter disagreed with this and wrote that using just black, magenta and yellow could produce good paintings. I just had to try out the colours this morning and must say that I'm not sure. Possibly I should have used a different yellow. The whole thing was an interesting experiment though and it's good I think to try colours that we wouldn't normally. These three colours wouldn't be my first choice and will probably go back in to my box of unused tubes of paint.
