Nice painting Louise, especially your cling film & sponge to give a dappled light effect on the branches and leaves.

Lovely sketch Louise

Lovely sketch! Your trees look very natural and authentic. I love the effect of dappled shade you have achieved on the sloping ground under the trees and the whole effect is loose and expressive. You don't usually paint trees like this, so hats off to you for producing yet another complete change of subject and style - you are the great experimenter I think!

Louise, the sponge you used has been very successful; in my humble opinion, it's not the tools that are so important but the skill of the hands that use them, and this sketch shows your skill.

Thank you Pat, Petra, Thea and Jane. Jane, that's very kind of you! A natural sponge would be better though I know. (I've been washing up with my Asda cheapo one)

Whatever the sponge, I like the effect, Louise. Spontaneous, great light effect and atmosphere. Lovely!

I agree with the above, Louise, this is really a successful experiment.

Great use of a varied palette Louise - good use of the sponge although i have never used one so i am no expert.

Many thanks Seok, Mia and Michael. A natural sponge should give better irregular leaf shapes and dabbing on layers of paint to indicate leaves is obviously a lot quicker than painting them with a brush. I shall try again with the proper 'equipment'. The pan scourer is useless (lol)

I love this Louise, you are putting the cling film to good use, getting some great effects which add to your lovely free brush stokes.

I like this Louise, the cling-film makes the trees look as if they are blowing in the wind. Lovely light and shade on the ground too.

The whole painting is absolutely delightful Louise! The trees look very natural but at the same time there is something abstract in them. I love playing with cling-film and sponges now and then but would never been able to produce such a lovely painting. Well done!

Thank you Fiona, Carole and Satu. It's very rewarding for me to receive comments from other artists whose work I admire so much.

Absolutely beautiful Louise

A natural sponge would have been better - as you know! But the important thing about this one and your other tree study is that you're experimenting: always a good idea, but most of us find it hard to screw up enough courage to do it (all right, I find it hard!). I prefer your other tree painting, to be honest - because I have the impression you lost a bit of control here (scarcely hard to do with watercolour); but, others obviously don't agree and t'is in the eye of the beholder!

many thanks for commenting Glennis and Robert. To be honest Robert, I prefer this one but I feel that I rather lost control in both paintings. The paint was a little too heavily applied in the other one for my liking :)

watercolour 29 cm x 42 cm. I used cling film and a piece of sponge for the leaves. Probably natural sponge would have given a better result than the cheap washing up sponge that I used :)
