Great Western Railway Locomotive in Woodhams Yard, Barry c. 1980
The first time I ever visited South Wales was in 1976 when I persuaded my parents to take me on a day excursion to Barry Island so I could visit Dai Woodham's scrap yard. By the mid 70s Woodhams was the only scrapyard which hadn't cut up the steam locomotives sold off by British Rail at the end of the 60s. They're all gone now, but a significant number of the preserved engines on heritage railways throughout Britain were originally bought from Woodhams Yard them restored. Watercolour on paper.
