Hobbit (x2) A4 sketchbook. Pen & Ink and Pen, ink and pencil shading.

I like both!

Good morning Lewis , I think your pen work is strong enough to capture and hold attention "as is" and the additional shading , whilst being the icing on the cake , does not add greatly to the original visual impact. The tree has the strongest visual impact and that appears to have not changed . Having said all that , I do prefer the shaded version as being more complete but would be pleased to have produced either.

Both are excellent work in on there own. If presented separately either one would be seen as great pen work. As they are side by side the shaded one stands out more and would be my preferred choice. One again Lew you demonstrate how skilled you are with a pen.

I like them both, Lewis, but think I prefer the pen and ink version, the focus is more on the figure.

Thanks very much for your comments. Actually I added some penciled shadow to the right side of the tree...it looks better on the actual drawing. I think all I've learned is that pencil can be a useful addition...especially as it can be rubbed out if I made a hash of it.

Hi Lew, my preferred version is the one with shading, I like some of the foreground left white, it shows up the shadows more, also I like the mountains shaded in, for me it makes the drawing more complete, however that said both drawings are your normal excellent standard!!

It's the shaded one for me, mainly I think because the shading on the Hobbit and his clothes seems to give more contrast between light and dark, even though that might just be an illusion.

The shaded one shades it for me. As always superbly drawn.

Hard choice Lewis - think I'll go for the Ink & Pen, but hey ho both are great.

Both are great, Lewis, love his Hobbit hairy feet! I agree with Mike and Linda, As most have said, the one with shading I prefer.

Thanks again to everyone for your comments. It seems you mostly prefer the shaded one. I must say the drawing (with the penciled shading added) looks better than my photo. It's a nice easy way to add a bit of subtle shading, and, unlike a wash, can be rubbed out if desired.

I like the added pencil which seems to add texture to the picture, but both are good.

The one with shading for me but both are great.

A comparison. I draw the pic on the left with an 05 pen. Intending to have little or no shading. Then I thought how would it look with more shading on it. So I took a pic just of the penwork, then I used a 4b pencil, thinking I could rub it out if it spoilt it. Not sure I learned anything, they are both OK. Any preference I might have depends on how I'm feeling that day. (I finally used one of Dawn's photos (the tree), the rest is made up.)
