Romeo and Juliet - a repost. by Lewis Cooper

No room for this in the description area...apparently there was no regulation or law banning women performing on stage. Acting was thought a disreputable activity, and no place for women. The theatres obliged in accepting this cultural custom, and used men in the female roles. Plus, of course, they knew very well that the Privy Council and Lord Mayor could close their theatres. About 50 years after Shakespeare died King Charles II gave permission for women to appear on stage.

Desperation maybe!? Good one Lew.

So funny and a great re-post Lewis

Had a good chuckle at this one, Lew!

A great repost. Made me chuckle.

It was the tattoo , oh no it wasn’t oh yes it was.

For never was a story of more woe Than THIS Juliet and her Romeo (with apologies to the bard)

Made me laugh. Very good Lew.

Great humour and excellent sketching what more could we ask for.

Thanks for my morning chuckle Lewis. Great illustration.

Great picture Lew , well done.

Juliet is gorgeous 😂 love her hairy chest!

Tremendous drawing skills on show here Lew…I was also forced to watch that film when it premiered!

Very funny and superbly drawn characters Lewis

Quite a comedy yes, those pantaloons and her hairy arms,, 'to be or not to be? that is the question maybe?

Thanks to all for your response to this oldie, although some may not have seen it the way pictures wizz through the gallery when it’s busy. The Shakespeare era fascinates me, I’ve visited Stratford and the Singleton museum and find the way they lived in those times very interesting. I thought the film did its best to recreate those times, although the storyline was a bit iffey.

Still too be found in the good old British pantomine I believe Lewis.

I’ve not seen this before so a good repost. Made me chuckle

So funny and well drawn!

Did they not have ‘ye olde spec savers’ in Will’s time? Blimey, that’s a piece of work! Great work lewis.

Lewis your work is just amazing.

A fabulous drawing as well as a good chuckle

Wonderfully imagined Lew. Just love Romeo's comment.

I watched the Shakespeare in Love movie. OK. A key part of the plot was that women were forbidden to perform on stage...boys and young men played the female roles. Thought I'd draw something along those lines, then remembered I already had. This is it, from about five years ago.

Self taught. Love drawing. Like to make pictures up, without using reference pics, often in cartoon style. I do other pictures where I do use reference. I'm knocking on a bit, born in 1940 in Greenwich, London. Retired, and loving it.
