Beautiful warm colours but for such a sad story. Brought a tear to my eyes! There must be a happy end.

Agree with avril...my heart goes out to old and neglected animals.

Ooooh so sad, lovely painting.

Thank you Avril, Ruth and Sylvia for your comments and for taking the time out to post them. This was painted from the heart as you can imagine and I wish I could say that there was a happy ending. I came upon this sad little fellow when visiting a bar/restaurant with friends in the campo (countryside) near where I live in Spain. Sadly there is seldom a happy ending to any animal story in Spain, most Spanish (but by all means not all) have no concept of neglect, or cruelty and have little regard for pain and suffering, especially with regard to the suffering of animals and I'm afraid this donkey was no exception. We were trying to find him a home but he was found dead at the back of the small stable before we could help him. At least he was released from his miserable life, and the least I could do for him was paint him. I'm sorry the painting doesn't have a happier ending.

Many thanks Angela for comment on Patapouf who is very fortunate. I have one story with a happy end - my neice rescued an abandoned dog whilst living in Spain and he now lives a happy life in England and France! (Has his own passport etc!)

Thank you so much for your comment on my painting Angela. I then had to check out your gallery and am so full of admiration for the work that you do. Acrylics, oils, pastels... is there no end to your talent! This one brought a tear to my eye - being involved in Greyhound Rescue I am very well aware of the problems the canine population encounter in Spain. To think of this poor creature and thousands like him suffering so cruelly is so very sad. Well done for having the courage to paint this scene - it is very moving.

This painting is stunning and I love your gallery. If I can ever paint to this standard I'd be a happy man. I am new to painting, but now retired I can devote time to it. I just love every second I work on a project and have painted everything in my gallery since the end of January. I'm learning so much all of the time. Thank you so much for the wonderful things you said about my latest, Applecross to Skye, I'm not too happy about certain aspects of the painting, and saw the painting as an exercise. Oh well, I'll carry on trying something different. Many thanks.
