Three Boats At Staithes
I painted Three Boats At Staithes as an exercise in simplification for my website blog. The starting point was a photograph of Staithes Beck in North Yorkshire, in evening light. Using Photoshop Elements (a great tool for the amateur user), I cropped out everything but these boats and merged the background into a single, shadowy mass. I simplified the scene further as I painted, for instance omitting the boats' nameplates and several mooring ropes. This let me concentrate on the features I liked: the pointed shapes of the boats and their shadows; the colours; the way the light flared on the edge of the boat at the back.
