The angle was a bit disconcerting - it made me think and look closer. Of course! It's on a hill - and then the angle somehow makes more sense. As to the simplified areas - I love them. The contrast between those and the highly detailed areas is just what is needed. It's a great image.

This is a truly wonderful painting Ken! The tilt is fine, it makes the picture even more believable and what comes to those simplified areas, I think they emphasise the extremely detailed parts. You have got people in the bus and the reflection of that couple on the wall...wow!

Beautifully painted Ken

Satu has summed it up well. I have no problem with the tilt. Glasgow is hilly, and before I had registered that you were writing about Glasgow I thought I recognised it. I like everything about it. Excellently done. It is and interesting painting. I also like the little detail; the bus barging out in front of the car. Lovely sense of movement down hill.

A striking picture! A really good composition where the eye is initially drawn to the light reflecting of the car in the foreground.

Agree with all that has been said - a great painting, full of atmosphere. Amazing how you have combined massive detail (you know exactly what make of cars are in there, for instance, and that the bus is taking a right turn because of the drivers shoulder position) with the simplified area back right, without it seeming contrived. As you specifically ask, I could mention one slight point with regard to perspective : the paving stones on the far left seem to be climbing the wall a little, only the figure and the shadow tell the eye that it is horizontal. But that's really splitting hairs, and I for one could not do it half as well.

Great technique and treatment

I too agree with all the other comments -- a lovely painting full of atmosphere, with just enough detail held together by powerful areas of tone. Proof that watercolour doesn't have to be wish-washy.

My first thought was "San Francisco" or some such place. It's a glamorous work - in both technique, vision and subject-matter. Congratualtions.

Agree with all the comments. I think the tilt makes the composition more exciting. The reflective light on the back of the car, although brilliantly done, to me I find a bit gimmicky . All in all a fabulous painting!

Super stunning watercolour - you have captured the sunlight superbly.

Fabulous painting. It stands out from the crowd and is a great subject.

Thanks to everyone who commented for the kind remarks. For Helen, good luck with your first street scene... to answer your question, no, I don't use a mahl stick. I suppose I'm used to painting verticals, but it does take concentration and care. If you find it too difficult, though, try turning your painting on its side and working side to side rather than up or down.

I love the light in this, great skill.

A super gallery!

Wellington Street is in Glasgow. I've shown it backlit in bright sunlight. (Yes, the sun does shine in Glasgow. Sometimes.) I'd welcome feedback on two points in particular. First, the slight leftward tilt on the street. I messed around with the angles and perspective before I started painting and this version seemed to work best. Second, to curb my habit of over-detailing everything in sight, I forced myself to keep some areas simple (e.g., top right corner) while I saved the detail for more interesting parts.
