Stepping Stones, Box Hill by Jenny Harris

I like this; it reminds me of children's book illustration from the 60's (showing my age). Nice background effect. I have some of those water soluble pastels but never really used them. I will dig them out - thanks.

I like the original Jenny , but this seem better from what I recall of the other version. I do like the colours, I’ve never used water soluble pastel must have a look at them.

Whatever you used, it's a great result. The choice of colours work perfectly.

I like this a lot! It is definitely different and really effective!!

Super good Jenny

Thanks very much Andrew, Paul, Lewis, David and Heather! These water soluble wax pastels are definitely worth a try - they’re amazingly versatile, especially when used in conjunction with watercolour. The News section of this site currently has an article about them.

Simple but so effective.

Many thanks, Stephen!

Love your style Jenny,

I didn’t see the original Jenny but I like this one. Love the dappled effect you have running through the painting, and the softness that echoes the shady areas under trees and beside flowing water.

Lovely style Jenny, a good one again.

When skill and imagination come together the result can be delightful, as here. I always look forward to your posts Jenny. Keep them coming.

Thank you so much David, Fiona, Carole and Frank for your kind comments, they are really appreciated!

This is so different Jenny. It reminds me of some Japanese art. The colours are so delicately harmonious and I love the way the stepping stones lead you into the scene.

Thanks, Carole! It’s a local scene I’ve painted a few times before, but not using the pastels over watercolour on a gesso base - it produces some lovely effects - and the pastels have a beautiful range of colours, especially yellows and greens.

So beautifully done

Thank you, Romila!

A bit of an experiment - had already posted and deleted an earlier version of this as I wasn’t really happy with the composition or colours. Reworked it by adding gesso to most areas and then using mainly Neocolour II water soluble wax pastels. Maybe a bit of an odd choice of colours but wanted to try something different!
