Thank you all for your lovely comments. Much appreciated. I really did enjoy doing this loose background, and I love the colours too. I seem to do quite a lot of paintings in green, white and violet, because I love those colours together, but also because they are the colours of the Suffragette movement, so they are significant. In fact it's very unusual for me to paint a painting without using a violet / purple of some kind! Many thanks Jacki

Yes Beverley, you're right I used good old cling film: very useful for breaking up what could otherwise be boring expanses of wash. And great fun too because you never know what you're going to get until you take it off 24 hours later!
