‘Across the Universe’

That,s Fantastic. What vision you have. Well done

Lennon said the lyrics came to him as he was lying in bed with his first wife, Cynthia. He said his wife had been going on and on about something but once she’d gone to sleep he couldn’t as her words kept going round and round in his head, over and over again ‘ like an endless stream going through the universe’. He went downstairs and turned his irritation into a ‘cosmic’ song rather than an ‘irritated’ song. It was also influenced by the Beatles interest in Transcendental Meditation, and he added the words, ‘Jai guru deva, om’. In a 1970 interview Lennon referred to the song as perhaps his best, most poetic lyric he’d ever written.
