The Admiration of Lady Iliffe

Love it. Great observational painting

Full of interest. The poses of the two viewers is just right, love the composition, and your treatment of the light on the lamp. For reasons I can't explain, I always find this subject matter very intriguing. Excellent work, Frank.

Great skilful painting Frank.

How interesting, a painting within a painting which works very well indeed. Like it a great deal.

A fabulous painting and concept Frank

Great idea that works splendidly, with loads of interest, skill and fantastic observation Frank.

Thanks Paul, Lewis, Carole, Heather, Russel and Carole for your kind comments. Lewis, the brightness in the lamp is one of the few unpainted areas.

I think it's the lamp that draws one's attention. Brilliant.

Excellent figure painting scene Frank. You've achieved a real sense of 3D by the sharp outlines of the coats.

This painting was inspired by a recent visit to Basildon Park. I've shown two ladies admiring the portrait of Lady Iliffe which stands in the house at the foot of the main staircase. Using a low key palette, and the addition of a shadowy background figure, I've tried to give this work a sense of atmosphere and intrigue. Gouache on W/C paper 25x36cm.
