A Winters Day in August

A Winters Day in August

Lovely bold foreground Fiona and great sky.

Lovely work Fiona very strong and bold feel to it which I do like very much

What a lovely composition Fiona, I really like the foreground with the great colours. A great pastel painting.

Brian, Dennis.....thank you for commenting, appreciate it. I don't think it's very successful tonal wise, too flat. I should have lightened off the distant tree line and fields, even made them a bit cooler. Thanks again.

Great foreground Fiona, shame about the weather! Raining here too :(

I like it Fiona. This is one that the longer you look at it the more you see and appreciate, if you know what I mean!

Spot on Fiona superb holds together brilliantly in my opinion

Thanks Carole....can't believe the weather we're having at the moment, parts of the garden are wrecked with heavy rain and wind, oh well, there's always next year....lol. Many thanks Dawn, appreciate your comment very much. Dennis you're a treasure, thank you.

So aptly titled Fiona. Lovely colours even if the weather is horrible.

Love the very expressive detailed foreground. You're a little harsh on yourself Fiona. What a complex composition to take on. I really like this.

Adele, I had the heating and the lamps on today! It's August for goodness sake, yesterday was pure sunshine and so hot.....that's Galloway for you....lol At least I can paint without feeling guilty, thank you very much for your feedback. Thank you Karen you are very kind. I could have simplified it a little more I think, might have another shot at it but make it a bit more sketchy.

Lovely strong picture , love the colours and the birds on the wires.

It's very Van Gogh Fiona, vibrant and full of movement.

Wonderful foreground, Fiona, and beautiful atmosphere in the background. Great pastel!

I'm pretty keen on tonal values , Fiona, and I didn't have anything jump out at me with this one. Don't know whether you can do this with a pastel , but I used to make a black & white photocopy of my work to check tonal values. Sorry about your weather - but we have had heavy showers as well - and misery loves a companion !! ( we are coming to the end of winter)

Just beautiful Fiona.

Love the colourful foreground, Fiona!

I love the colours in the foreground, Fiona. We've had an up and down August here too.

I really like this, Fiona. Don't give yourself a hard time about the tones. The strong dark of the trees against the light sky is important. True, the trees would appear more distant if they were lighter but you'd lose the impact. It doesn't have to be about depicting distance. In that respect and in the marks and textures and garden foreground, this reminds me of the work of Bonnard who is one of my favourite painters. The pattern of the starlings is great.

I went to Perth on Sunday and was surprised at the number of trees that are already well turned so autumn/winter isn't far away even though it's still August!! That foreground is stunning Fiona and I like the starlings on the wires.

Stunning! It jumped off the page Fiona!

Anne, Marjorie, Cesare, thank you very much. Marjorie, I'm still scaring myself to death with colour! Many thanks Mike for your valued comment....hope the rain has stopped for you, it's been a mixed bag here but rain again for tomorrow!! Another painting day for me!! Sandra, Jenny, Ellen....thank you ladies much appreciated. Roger, thank you very much for taking the time to leave your comment and for introducing me to Bonnard, who I was not familiar with. Looking at his work I see what you are saying about depth not always being the be all and end all of a composition. When painting the scene I was hoping the starlings would stay put and they did. It hasn't been too good a summer here on the west Val, hope you've faired better where you are. The veg garden has been rubbish this year, very disappointing. We had better get lots of things to paint lined up for the winter if it's coming early, it's going to be a long one...again! Lol Thank you x

Thank you Sarah, very much!

Love the flowers. As I have said, the pastels are suiting you.

Thanks again Gudrun, much appreciated.

This is beautiful, Fiona. Love the colours and marks, composition. And the mood!

Very nice pastel, love the colours

Shirley and David, many thanks for your support.

I've been looking at your paintings Fiona and they are getting better and better. They are stronger, freer and bolder. I've been away the whole summer in Finland and couldn't keep up with POL so that's why I haven't been commenting. I'm back now and start painting again. Well done you!

Thank you very much Satu, I appreciate your feedback.

Thanks again Diane......are you bored ....lol x

12x9 pastel. Sorry Alan but another one from the window! The view out towards the hills today, you would think it winter if not for the buddleia and fennel in the foreground. Not only the weather indicating the passing of the season but also the starlings are gathering on the wires. In contrast, yesterday was blistering!
