Forgot to add, the horizon isn't level because the far shore sweeps round in to a cove.

This is lovely Fiona...great colours ...think one boat and one buoy works well!

Brilliant Fiona a quite superb achievement and lovely painting

Excellent Fiona. It captures the atmosphere very well.

I really like this Fiona and good for you painting it from memory. You can almost feel the dampness in the air!! I keep meaning to ask if you are still using water-soluble oils or did you transfer to "real" oils when you started attending classes.

Great Fiona, what a lovely painting, water the whole scene beautiful.

Really is lovely Fiona. Rigging is great. I find everything about this painting lovely - well done.

Caught my eye Fiona, beautiful!

Painting from memory Fiona, that's fab! Excellent result with gorgeous greys and the dinghy is so beautifully painted.

Very accomplished work Fiona, especially as it is from memory. Your oils are certainly coming in a treat.

Thanks ever so much everyone for your positive feedback, appreciate you taking the time to comment. Carol, yes I changed to traditional oils when I joined this class, thank you for your comment.

Many thanks Stephen! I think it helped my memory being familiar with the place, it's only a short drive away. The thing that struck me about the day was the colour of everything....it was just so grey, with only the splash of colour from the buoys and on the boats.

Nice one Fiona, I think any more boats would have spoiled it personally , really like the sky effect and the harbour wall, smashing job considering you had to play catch up.

Nothing stops the artist in you Fiona. It has a good atmosphere. I particularly like the fact that you have done the sky with downward strokes it gives variety as apposed to the more horizontal marks of the water. All goes to making a good painting.

What a lovely painting Fiona, I don't know how you managed this from memory. The grey palette I like, the reflections on the left are subtle , the overall effect is harmonious. One of your best I think.

Impressive work from memory! Great use of colours too.

'Good on you' Fiona..... The class was cancelled?? how odd. A lovely calm memory.

Gorgeous as ever Fiona

I love the colour scheme, Fiona and you have done a great job to do it from memory. I find the best paintings come from memories because one just recalls the essential ingredients.

Really good and pleasing Fiona.

Many thanks everyone for your comments and encouragement......the main thing that stuck in my mind about the scene was the 'grey' dampness, the harbour wall probably isn't that shape and the cottages/houses on the far horizon aren't perhaps in the right place but they are there in some form....not too worried about that, it looks how I felt and that's near enough. It will be duely gessoed and ready for the next practice.... Thanks again!

Very atmospheric Fiona. Lovely palette that you have used here :)

Thanks Sarah!

It's fabulous, Fiona! Considering the conditions, I would have gone home and done nothing! It's loaded with atmosphere, and that lone boat really works well compositionally, anchoring the eye.

You've certainly maintained the atmosphere without the camera Fiona, re-creating the damp misty weather.

Thanks very much Seok and Peter!

Very good indeed Fiona and a cracking sky , you've handled the boat very well and indeed they can be tricky I've shed tears over them in the past 😊

Thanks Dermot, I must admit not one of my favourite subjects....only because I don't practice of course. If I could do boats like yourself I would be doing many more scenes with them included.

Very beautiful and atmospheric.

Thank you very much Anne.

Thank you Yana!

20" x 16" oil on board. First class of the spring term and painting on location at the Isle of Whithorn, last week. It was cold, breezy and very damp, not raining but misty damp. The class was cancelled in the end but I took a mental note, (mental because I didn't take my camera) of the scene and atmosphere. Did this when I got home, there should be more boats but I pulled that much hair out trying to do just one....I thought, forget it, I'll put an extra bouy in!lol
