Sounds a sacred and beautiful place Fiona, a lovely pen and wash with soft colour.

well executed great subject very nice Fiona

Lovely and thanks for all the info

Really like the warm colour scheme Fiona and the pen work of course!

The story of St Ninian is very interesting Fiona! I hadn't heard of him before. Very nice sketch too!

An interesting place and I like the colors you've used and the placement of the cross.

I would do more. This hints at lots of possibilities. I really like the rich tones.

Lovely tones in the rocks and the use of purples is super. Nice story to go with the painting as well.

Thank you so much everyone, glad you quite like it despite my narrative. I wasn't even sure about posting it......for much the same reason as I use for most of my sketches......messy! Thanks again, you are all so very encouraging.

Wow, Fiona, a painting with a story, I like that. Beautiful, lively and spontaneous pen and wash.

I agree with Mia, the story makes it Fiona!

Thank you Mia and Ros for your very kind comments.

Not a place I've been to (unless you count St Ninians in Stirling LOL ) but it looks a very spiritual and peaceful place. Lovely soft palette and gentle washes.

It's lovely.

Thank you Val and Amanda.

Pen & wash. St. Ninian's cave is at the end of a beach in a small cove about 1.5 miles from the road. It is said to be the place were St. Ninian chose to spend his 'me time' in the 4th/5th century. It has been a place of pilgrimage ever since. There is a catholic mass there every August and is patronised by pilgrims from all over. It has a very humble feel to the place, there are many rustic crosses made from driftwood of all sizes bound by seaweed as well as ones carved in the rocks many centuries old. There are other tokens such as poems, candles, and pebbles with messages of love, freindship, remembrance and prayers written on them left in cracks in the cave and surrounding rocks. The shapes of the rocks are quite abstract really, more so than I've rendered them here. Might do something more from it. Done in the sketch book, old Holland paints and Indian ink. Apologies for the blethering!
