Apologies for the quality of picture, not the best light for taking photo's, especially of this subject.

It's looking very good to me Fiona. Yes the light has been poor . A great exercise

A really great start Fiona. We are going to do same sort of exercise in two weeks time, can't wait!

This is a very useful exercise Fiona, and a good result so far. This one has really pushed you out of your comfort zone and made you think about shapes in tonal values rather than colour, this tutor knows his stuff. This is a good standard that you have achieved.

This is very painterly Fiona and a great start.

Great start Fiona, lovely shape and tones in that little bowl front right.

Now this is a change for you Fiona, look forward to the finished artwork

Well begun is half done! Very great, Fiona!

Dennis, Satu, Alan, Ivan, marjorie, Val, Glennis, Cesare.....many thanks for your support and encouragement on this one.....I need it!lol

This is a great way to learn about tonal relationships and invaluable as its something you will always remember , great stuff Fiona

I wish I could attend a similar session - what a good idea, and I imagine you learned a lot too judging from this subtle painting. I look forward to seeing more of your weekly paintings.

This piece is working well and I look forward to it's final touches. My thoughts are about the arrangement and if your tutor did this layout I would have a go.

Thanks Dermot, I certainly hope I will remember some of this, I would hate to have to keep doing these exercises!lol
Thank you Julie, it does make you familiar with colour and tone.
I hope to do more next week Derek, will keep you posted. The lay out of the items wasn't for compositional reference, it was for basic tone and colour. There were many more items scattered on the cloth, I just chose these few to do and I'll do a few more next session. He never sets our pieces we have to arrange our own, wouldn't learn much about composition otherwise.lol

Ok point well and truly taken Fiona, slap my wrists

Lovely Fiona. A gentle palette which is lovely.

Lovely muted tones and makes for a harmonious painting. A good exercise and will try it myself

Thank you very much Jennifer. Thanks Jane, you definitely don't need the practice.....lol It is an interesting exercise though.

Love the beautifully muted hues and the subtle shifts of tones. A difficult piece to paint, but you've acquitted yourself superbly.

24"x16" oil on canvas board. New term of oil classes which will be concentrating on colour; this one is about tones and neutrals. This isn't finished by any means and it's very much a work in progress. I found this exercise so difficult, white objects on a white cloth, the idea is to form the shapes and tones with neutral shades. Thankfully the exercise wasn't about the accuracy of the objects just the tones. Excellent practice of paint mixing too. More of the same for next week, can something like this ever be considered 'finished'?
