The cat is out of the bag now Fiona! You can do it. Very good!

There's nothing you can't do Fiona

Looks good to me Fiona.

I remember my very first portrait and I do look at it every now and then to remind myself that I have actually progressed. The first one is always the most exciting as when doing a face, there comes a point that the person you either can see, or you know, suddenly emerges from the page (well, if you are lucky, lol!) - a eureka moment. I think you have made a super start with this one Fiona, and as Dennis says, is there nothing you can't do!!

First but not last Fiona, splendid effort good honest portrait

You've made an excellent job of this Fiona, it's good to get away from our comfort zone and surprise ourselves! Like you though it's something I've always shied away from!

Very nice Fiona.

Well done Fiona, you have put your big toe into the portrait world, look forward to your next.

It's really very kind of your all to encourage me in the pursuit of portraiture, and even though I'm absolutely amazed at the result, I don't think it's a subject I could get interested in. I can honestly say that if I could have got out of it in any way yesterday, believe me I would have done. It's strange but after the tutor did the example sketch (top right of the page, regarding angles etc) I can't remember making any conscious decisions, or any of the process....and what's really spooky is I was drawing with my lefthand at the same time as with my righthand, how wierd is that? I think they put something in the coffee! If anyone has an explanation for that, I would be interested to hear it.

That is a copy of our Persian rug Fiona. The one I brought from Saudi in about 1986

Your talents are stunning and this is one smashing portrait and It must be a good likeness.

Snap Derek! I didn't get any of my rugs from Saudi......they last forever don't they. You are very kind Derek thank you, you only have my word that it's a good likeness, I think I've made him a little younger looking. I'm still amazed that the portrait looks anything like human!Lol.

Good expression Fiona, shading with colour is very clever.

Well done Fiona! Next step to do a selfie! You are on a roll :)

Many thanks Carole, I only really put colour on because I had finished before everyone else and had half an hour to kill.Lol. Oh NO Sarah, this is it! Thanks very much for leaving a comment.

This is really well done, Fiona! You've really captured the nuances of light and shadow so very skillfully. Wish my first portrait looked like that!

It's a damn good effort, well done. I can see teacher's sketches, he seems a good help.

Alan, he's an excellent teacher, after he's explained something, it's crystal clear.

Gudrun, this is for you. I've never wanted to do portraits, however, I was forced into it today due to the weather. I wasn't very happy that my landscape class was replaced with a portrait class, help! Three hours later, this appeared in front of me, it's a bit rough but it does have some resemblance to the sitter...amazingly. Sorry I haven't cropped it, it looks better from a distance...lol. Chalk and charcoal to begin with a little pastel added at the end.
