Liquid Charcoal - cherry pit black

Comments

Never tried liquid charcoal but it looks so effective in your painting Fiona.

Great image, Fiona, and liquid charcoal is fab! I love using it!

Another striking painting, Fiona. That liquid charcoal works so well.

Beautifully done Fiona, its so effective!

I also haven’t tried this but you have cracked it here Fiona. Lovely work.

Another great piece Fiona

Nice one, I like this version and a rather delicious wet in wet sky - which adds drama of course!

In your hands, it's so expressive - not sure what it might look like in mine, but got to try it.... I have used charcoal shavings, from a pencil, plus water; and also carbon pencil with water, conté, chalks, pastel: all produce results you wouldn't necessarily expect, or I didn't when I first used them - I suppose this is what keeps us producing work: there's never an end to the things you can discover.

Another great result Fiona. I think I might have to update my Christmas list!!

Not something I've tried, but it's very effective in your hands.

I have a pan set which I’ve just tried once and found them very delicate. You’ve got a good effect here….are you sold on them?

Another successful trial Fiona.

Thanks everyone for your feedback on the charcoal. I do like using it but I think in the right hands it could be a very effective medium, I’m just skimming the surface of its potential. Robert, treat yourself. I’ve used it as I do watercolour, although you don’t need to use too much in the mix. I’m sure it mentioned somewhere when I read up about it that you can erase it, my sample must be particularly stubborn. It’s clean when dry but it will re-wet if you want to lift out. Thanks again.

I've got the same 3 tubes you mention, and I have to agree they are great to use. Good picture Fiona.

I’m beginning to like it very much Trevor……wondering what to try out next for a proper go! Thanks very much for your comment.

Fiona - never say you don't have an effect: you may know that I am as mean as tongs, but I have just ordered the liquid charcoal from Bromley's, and some Nitram charcoal when I was about it, and that's down to you. I was already thinking of doing so, having seen Andrew Barrowman's work in liquid charcoal (look him up on YouTube, you'll be interested) but as I thought he could make a decent drawing out of seared potato peelings, I held back. It took you to convince me.

It very effective Fiona, good balance of light and dark in this piece.

That looks an interesting medium Fiona

Very effective Fiona, now looking forward to seeing the third one.

Very impressed with these charcoal paintings Fiona,

The second tube of the three liquid charcoal set. It’s made by Schmincke, there are three 5ml tubes in the set….grape seed black, cherry pit black and peach stone black. From Ken Bromley’s it’s about £18 but it gives you chance to try before committing to larger tubes. The cherry pit has a reddish colour.
