First attempt at watercolour

First attempt at watercolour

This coastal subject is well captured and an ideal practice. Cliffs, headland and beach work well even the suggestion intended or not of a darker weather sky and sea coming in from the left. Boats need some careful thought but just practice some studies of them from book and photos and of course on the water.

Keep on posting your work bob

Sky, headland and beach work well Bob. Some work needed on boats and sea but altogether not bad at all. Very brave of you to sit amongst those interested eyes. Just read this is your first attempt at watercolour - I have now upgraded it to "great" as I could never do this in that medium and certainly not at a first attempt!

A good great attempt at watercolour. And very brave of you to paint outside with onlookers and added complications of paint drying too fast or not drying at all. I work from photographs as I've not plucked up the courage to paint outside. Well done.

Derek and Adele, thank you both very much for your comments. Advice from you both regarding boats duly "taken on board". My problem with the boats was more about how to deal with them in conjunction with the washes for the sea. When using acrylic, if I have doubts, I use a policy of painting what was there first, i.e. table, then people or in this case, sea, then boats, and I can correct the form as I go. I wasn't entirely sure if I could do that with w/colour so I stopped painting. Should have just carried on to see what happened ! Paul, thanks very much, I will definitely keep posting! I love your "two colour" paintings by the way. Especially " Band"

Thanks for your kind comments, Ellen. I actually enjoyed it, but then, I play in a band on my weekly visits to Dorset and I am quite used to making a fool of myself in front of people !! I recommend you give it a go because the painting experience is very liberating ! And people are generally much happier to praise than criticize

Painted en plein air at Worbarrow Bay, Dorset. I have to say, I didnt find it easy, using a new medium with people watching, but I enjoyed the immediacy of the it. I got stuck on how to do the boats, hence, it's unfinished.
