It catches the eye on the page David, I like it. I like the way you've restricted the colours so the complementary of the raft really shines out. The shark gets you thinking....oh dear. The water is good, it mirrors the shapes of the sea.

The water has an ethereal other worldly effect. From.my reading about shipwrecked sailors, the sea soon becomes an alien world trying to kill.you. Your picture is good. If I mayas to make one coment id say the raft is too still, too static. Needs more dynamism in it...it is after all an inflatable Good work D

I think subconciously I put the raft flat to illustrate the relentless tedium of being adrift, afterwards I thought "had I put it at an angle it would have been more dynamic" so your point is well taken, part of the learning curve I will try to think this sort of thing through before rather than after next time.

Very atmospheric, David. The sea can be cruel and you’ve portrayed that. I like the limited palette too.

I meant to say, "the water mirrors the shape of the land" - that makes more sense.

It looks like a periscope view. I feel clod and wet just looking at it.

I too like the bright colour of the raft standing out against this dark menacing water.

A2, my first attempt at water or a sky in about 3 decades... I used three reference pictures (a shark, life raft and one of the sea) I didn't really refer to these after sketching it out, which is probably why my water doesn't look like water very much)

About the Artist
D Hillman

Inspired by an artist friend I came back to paint a bit at the end of 2017. At the moment I am enjoying it and maybe because I have the patience to look more than I once did I am finding it easier and more enjoyable to actually produce a likeness.
