Basilica di San Francesco, Assisi
"Assisi", Umbria, Italy. 76x56cm Watercolour on Arches rough 300g. We stayed at the Country House Carfagna Sandro, right below Assisi. This was the wonderful view we had from the terrace where we enjoyed our daily breakfast. I started this watercolour with wet in wet brushstrokes for the sky to set the mood. As focal point I took the main tower from the Basilica di San Francesco. It really stood out against the dark bottom of the clouds behind. The pink-stoned main building with multiple rows of arcades I tried to keep simple and not to overwork it. I used cadmium red and yellow ochre for the building and added ultramarine to the mix for the cast shadows of the arcades. The foreground is just a suggestion of the hill and the typical vegetation in Umbria.
