“Herengracht”, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Watercolour 56x38cm, on Saunders Waterford, rough, 640g. I made an early morning walk in the most charming part of Amsterdam, the girdle of canals. My eyes where drawn to an old style humpback bridge over the picturesque waterway called Herengracht (= Gentlemen’s Canal). I created several small-scale sketches to work out the main shapes and tonal values. The colours of the morning sky I noted in my sketchbook. At home I painted the scene with a limited palette of Naples Yellow, Light Oxide Red, Cerulean Blue, French Ultramarine and some Burnt Umber. I hope you like the outcome!
