Osaka I, Japan
56x76cm, Watercolour on Arches rough, 300g. This was the view from my hotel room in Osaka. The early morning sun casted a pattern of shadows over the main road below my window. I sketched the main shapes in my small notebook. Then I addressed the tonal values to the different shapes. When I came back home I created this full size watercolour painting based on my sketch and notes. I used a limited palette to paint this morning scene and tried to keep the shaded areas transparent to let some of the details still visible. It is very easy to overwork a busy scene like this, therefore I left out some cars and reduced the number of people on the road. Nevertheless I think I could capture the feeling of a busy cityscape, I hope.
