Flowergate, Whitby
There's a handy, much-weathered pog on which to sit, outside the Little Angel pub on Flowergate, Whitby, presumably a relic from past coaching days. It offers this view down towards the river with Whitby Abbey sitting on the hillside opposite. With light from top right casting shadows across the street and the slope of the land offering some perspective challenges in the shop fronts, this made an interesting composition. Its slightly landscape proportion meant spreading across two pages in my square sketch book, hence the spine about a quarter of the way in from the left. It's important to assess the proportions of your subject beforehand, to get the correct starting point and scale of the parts in your first marks. An aperture to look through, made with the hands can be very useful.
